A good heavyweight hoodie is a buy-once piece, as long as you treat it like one.

The difference between a hoodie that still looks sharp three winters from now and one that goes baggy, faded and flat by spring is almost never the fabric. It is how it gets washed and dried. The heavier the hoodie, the more those few small habits matter. Here is how to keep a 460gsm fleece looking and feeling like the day you bought it.

Good news

Your hoodie is built to survive you

Here is the reassuring part. The Cloud Hoodie is a cotton and polyester blend, and that blend quietly does a lot of the work for you. The polyester holds the shape so it will not stretch out or sag, helps the colour hold across repeated washes, and stops the fleece from soaking up moisture. The smooth outer face is tight-woven to resist pilling. If you want the full breakdown of how it is put together, it is all on The Make.

In other words, this is not a delicate hoodie. Caring for it is less about babying it and more about not undoing that engineering with one thing: heat.

The basics

Why heavyweight fleece asks for a little more

A 460gsm hoodie behaves differently to a thin one in two ways that matter. First, it holds water. All that density means a soaked heavyweight is genuinely heavy, and that weight will pull the shoulders and hem out of shape if you hang it up wet. Second, the fleece interior is what gives it that enveloping, weighted feel, and heat and fabric softener are the two things that flatten it. Protect the loft and protect the shape, and the rest looks after itself.

Do this

  • Wash cold, on a gentle cycle
  • Turn it inside out first
  • Use a mild liquid detergent
  • Air dry flat, reshaping while damp
  • Store it folded, not on a hanger

Avoid

  • Hot water or a hot dryer
  • Fabric softener
  • Hanging it up while wet
  • Long spells in harsh direct sun
  • Washing it after every single wear
The wash

The wash, step by step

  1. Turn it inside out. This protects the smooth outer face and the logo from the friction of the wash.
  2. Wash cold, on a gentle or delicate cycle. Cold water cleans normal wear perfectly well and it is the single easiest way to avoid shrinkage.
  3. Use a mild liquid detergent, and not too much. Overdosing and heavy powders leave residue sitting in the fleece.
  4. Skip the fabric softener. It coats the looped fibres and slowly kills the loft and breathability that make the hoodie feel the way it does.
  5. Wash with like colours, and wash less often. Heavyweight fleece does not need cleaning after every wear. Air it out between wears and it will last far longer.
Drying

Drying: where good hoodies go to die

If there is one rule in this whole guide, it is this: keep it out of a hot dryer. High heat is the single biggest cause of shrinkage, and it flattens the fleece loft at the same time. Most hoodies that have gone small and stiff did it in the dryer, not the wash.

Air dry instead. Lay it flat and gently reshape it while it is still damp so it dries to the right shape. Do not hang it up soaking wet, because a 460gsm hoodie holds a lot of water and the weight will stretch the shoulders and hem. And keep it out of long, harsh direct sun, which lifts colour over time, especially on the deeper tones like Moss. If you absolutely have to use a dryer, run the lowest heat or an air-dry setting, then pull it out slightly damp and lay it flat to finish.

No shrinking

Do not shrink your premium hoodie

The blend is on your side here. A 100% cotton hoodie at this weight would shrink noticeably and lose its shape the first time it met hot water. The polyester in the Cloud Hoodie resists that, which is a big part of why the blend exists. But you can still force shrinkage if you try hard enough, and the way you do it is always the same: a hot wash followed by a hot dryer. Heat makes the cotton fibres contract.

The fix is simple. Cold wash, air dry, and it keeps the exact size you bought. The polyester holds the shape so it will not sag, which means heat is really the only threat worth thinking about. Remove the heat and you remove the problem.

For the long run

Keeping it looking new for years

The smooth matte face is built to resist pilling, and between that tight weave and the polyester in the blend, it stays even and clean exactly where most hoodies start to fuzz. Washing it inside out keeps it that way. In the rare event a stray bobble turns up at a high-friction point, like a bag-strap line, lift it gently with a fabric shaver rather than picking at it by hand, which pulls the weave.

Beyond that, it is mostly about shape. Store it folded rather than on a hanger, because a heavy hoodie left hanging slowly stretches at the shoulders under its own weight. For small marks, spot clean rather than running a full wash. And reshape it after every wash while it is damp, so it always dries back to the shape it is meant to hold. None of this takes effort. It is just the difference between a hoodie that ages well and one that does not.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash a heavyweight hoodie?

Less often than you think. Unless it is visibly dirty or you have sweated in it, every three to five wears is plenty. Heavyweight fleece holds up well between washes, and airing it out on a hook overnight does more good than another trip through the machine. Washing less is one of the easiest ways to make it last.

Can I put it in the dryer?

Best not to. A hot dryer is the number one cause of both shrinkage and a flattened fleece. If you have no choice, use the lowest heat or an air-dry setting, take it out while still slightly damp, and lay it flat to finish. Air drying is always the safer option for a hoodie at this weight.

Why skip fabric softener?

Softener works by coating fibres, and on a fleece-lined hoodie that coating flattens the looped texture, reduces the warmth and blocks breathability. The fleece is already soft on its own. If you want a little extra softness, a small splash of white vinegar in the rinse does the job without leaving a coating behind.

Will it shrink?

The cotton and polyester blend is specifically built to resist shrinking, so with a cold wash and air drying it will hold its size. Shrinkage only really happens when you combine a hot wash with a hot dryer, which makes the cotton content contract. Keep the heat out and it stays true to size.

Does it pill?

It is built not to. The tight-weave matte face and the polyester in the blend are there specifically to resist pilling over long-term wear, so it holds a smooth surface far longer than a standard cotton hoodie. Washing it inside out protects that face even further. If a stray bobble ever does appear at a friction point, a fabric shaver lifts it in seconds.
