Oversized vs Regular Fit: How to Get Hoodie Sizing Right

The right size is not the one on the tag you always buy. It is the one that gives you the fit you actually want.

Hoodie sizing is confusing because two hoodies labelled Medium can fit completely differently. One is cut close to the body, the other is built with room to move and drape. Before you choose a size, it helps to know which kind of hoodie you are looking at, and which look you are after. Here is how to get it right.

Oversized vs regular fit: what is the difference?

A regular fit follows the line of your body. The shoulder seam sits on your shoulder, the chest has a little ease, and the body falls straight without much extra fabric. It is neat and familiar, and it layers easily under a jacket.

An oversized fit is cut with deliberate extra volume. The shoulder seam drops down the upper arm, the chest and body are wider, and the sleeves have more room. It is not simply a regular hoodie in a bigger size. The proportions are designed differently so the extra fabric falls in the right places instead of just hanging.

Regular fit Oversized fit
Shoulder seam Sits on the shoulder Drops onto the upper arm
Chest and body Close, with light ease Roomy, with deliberate drape
Sleeves Trim through the arm Relaxed, gathered at the cuff
Overall look Neat, classic Relaxed, modern, structured

Why it matters

Why fit matters more on a heavyweight

Dropped shoulders and a heavyweight body. The weight is what makes the drape work.

On a thin hoodie, an oversized fit can look sloppy because the fabric has no body to it. On a heavyweight, it is the opposite. Dense fabric holds its shape, so extra room reads as structure rather than slack. That is why most heavyweight hoodies, the Cloud Hoodie included, are cut oversized. The weight and the cut are designed to work together.

It also means sizing up or down changes more than you might expect. A heavyweight does not cling, so a size too small feels boxy and restrictive, while a size too big can swamp a smaller frame. Getting it right is worth a couple of minutes.

The Cloud Hoodie

How the sft. Cloud Hoodie fits

The Cloud Hoodie is a unisex, oversized fit with dropped shoulders, ribbed cuffs and hem, a kangaroo pocket and a cord-free hood. It comes in sizes XS to 2XL. Here is the simple version:

Take your usual size for the fit it was designed for: relaxed, roomy and draped, with the shoulder seam sitting just off the shoulder.

Size down if you prefer a closer, more regular look, or if you usually sit between sizes and want less volume.

Size up if you want extra length and drop. The ribbed hem sits at the hip, and a size up gives you a longer line and even more room through the body.

Because the fit is unisex, it helps to think in terms of the look you want rather than the label you usually buy.

Measure once

The easiest way to check before you buy

The side profile shows the drop of the shoulder and where the hem lands.

Grab a hoodie or jumper you already love the fit of and lay it flat. Measure straight across the chest from armpit to armpit, then measure the length from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Compare those two numbers with the size chart on the product page. If your favourite piece falls between two sizes, decide which matters more to you: length or width. Size up for length, down for a neater body.

Worth remembering: the fabric is a dense cotton and polyester blend, built to hold its shape. The blend is not a compromise on quality. It is what makes the construction work. You can read more about the thinking behind the cut in The Make.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size up in an oversized hoodie?

Usually not. An oversized hoodie is already cut with extra room, so your usual size gives the intended fit. Size up only if you specifically want more length or an even slouchier look.

Is the sft. Cloud Hoodie unisex?

Yes. It is a unisex oversized fit in sizes XS to 2XL. Choose based on the look you want rather than the size you usually buy in a gendered range.

Will a heavyweight hoodie shrink?

Any cotton-blend garment can tighten slightly if it is washed hot or tumble dried on high. Wash cold, turn it inside out and dry it flat or on low to keep the fit where you want it. Our heavyweight hoodie care guide covers it step by step.
